Like Defying Gravity

Hannah Floyd and the Inherited Leap of Uprooting

Hannah Floyd (photo credit: Simon Richardson)

I distinctly remember when Hannah Floyd’s drabble, “Your ShipMail Log,” from Hotch Potch issue 3.2, arrived via our submission form and how my jaw hung open while I sat there on my couch reading it. Immediately, she pulled me into this world she had created with such few words, and I felt the thrill of being part of an experimental, sharp, and deeply emotional story experience. I did something I rarely do as the submission assignment editor: I gave myself a vote because I loved the piece so much.

Fast forward a year, and I had the privilege of sitting down with this sensitive and intelligent creator to talk about everything from setting timers to immigration to the pleasures of writing with a friend. I found out we’re both part of the same online writing community, Inked Voices, and that we share the value of nonmonetized creative practice. The conversation has something important to offer for anyone interested in writing or making a life around an artistic passion.

Hannah’s story in issue 4.2, also a drabble, is called “problem-solving,” and is inspired by “Leap of Faith,” below, by Lorraine Roy. The drabble explores the experience of uprootedness, an impulse that in the interview, Hannah describes as being part of her DNA. This story is as deeply engaging as that first one I read slack-jawed on my couch. If you love Hannah’s writing as much as I do, check out her haiku poem and this second poem based on the epic of Gilgamesh. And find her on Bluesky and Linktree.
