It’s rare that I meet my writer friends in person, so when Timothy C Goodwin and I discovered we were both signed up for Chris Tebbetts’ Theater Camp for Writers, I was over the moon. The four day workshop was phenomenal, and a special part was getting to hear Tim’s fabulous writing out loud as well as experiencing his wonderful stage presence.
We were lucky to have Tim’s story, “Doppelganger,” included in Hotch Potch Literature and Art issue 5.1.
Tim is a delightful storyteller, and our conversation took many luscious twists and turns. A few favorites: how Keith Johnstone’s narrative improv practice shaped Tim’s storybuilding chops; his evolving process around rejections, which now includes an overstuffed Kleenex box and an Excel spreadsheet; and his secret to nailing good dialogue and sharp comedic writing.
The one thing I would implore you to do, even if you decide not to listen to the interview, is to read Tim’s story, “Doppelgänger,” in Hotch Potch issue 5.1. It’s completely hilarious, brilliant, and unexpected, a well-crafted and sheer delight.
